The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is Australia's independent rule maker and adviser for the National Electricity Market, natural gas markets and related retail markets. It facilitates energy rule changes, carries out reviews and provides the nation’s Energy Ministers with advice on the design of regulatory and energy market arrangements.

About the Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to provide high-quality and actionable advice on economic issues affecting energy markets. Support policy decisions and the AEMC’s strategic priorities by influencing and contributing to evidence-based policy that embeds economic analysis. Identify and apply economic concepts when providing recommendations to solve real-world problems.
Key responsibilities in this challenging role will include:
As a Senior Economist, you are responsible for delivering high-quality, practical and timely economic advice and analysis to a range of stakeholders. You are able to influence, advise and support evidence-based policy which embeds economic reasoning, enhancing the consistency and quality of policy development. You will contribute to thought leadership on current developments and emerging trends in the energy market design to support the AEMC’s strategic priorities.
To do so, you are able to:
- Implement analytical frameworks and models which apply advanced economic concepts
- Identify, understand and balance the key trade-offs when providing advice
- Facilitate knowledge transfer and understanding of economic concepts, in relation to the energy markets, to ensure consistent application of economics in decision-making, and
- Communicate complex issues or concepts accurately and succinctly, avoiding jargon so that it is accessible to a wide range of stakeholders, including internal policymakers, consumers, journalists, industry participants and government.
About You - We are looking for candidates with:
- Tertiary qualifications in economics, commerce and/or other relevant disciplines, preferably in microeconomics.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a policy, research and/or regulatory role involving the application of economic concepts and analysis to decision-making processes;
- Flexibility to work well both collaboratively and autonomously, with a proactive, results-driven, and thoughtful disposition;
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain economic concepts to stakeholders and non-technical audiences;
- Strong interpersonal skills necessary to build effective partnerships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders;
- Flexible and innovative approach to problem-solving which takes into account diverse views and requirements;
- Demonstrated analytical skills, including quantitative skills and the proven ability to understand complex subject matters quickly; and
Expertise in competition economics, econometrics, and/or network regulation is not required, but would be an advantage as would knowledge of gas and/or electricity markets.
