How we intend to use AI

The AEMC sees the opportunity to use artificial intelligence (AI) in a safe and responsible way. We believe it can contribute to the effective and efficient delivery of our objectives for the Australian community, over time.

We will seek opportunities to:

• cultivate expertise within the AEMC to understand the impacts of AI across our regulatory remits
• enhance our ability to undertake analytics and generate insights
• improve workplace productivity including through reducing manual processes.

How we are using AI

The AEMC uses AI in the following ways:

• summarising public submissions to rule changes and reviews
• transcribing meeting notes
• enhancing the processing and use of complex datasets
• assisting staff in efficiently retrieving information,

Public interaction and impact

We do not currently deploy AI as part of the AEMC’s direct interaction with the public.

For all internal uses of AI, our processes make sure that we consider any potential impacts on the public. While AI may be used to assist in various tasks, oversight and decision making remains in human hands.

Monitoring AI systems

We have taken the following steps to monitor the effectiveness of deployed AI systems:

• adopting an AI procedure that includes an established AI review and approval pathway for internal use of AI
• standing up an internal working group that provides governance on the use of AI
• the publication of this transparency statement.
